I Can!
I want to see your beautiful face! I am putting together a project on Pinterest. Here's what it's all about. I was at a party at this year's IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) Conference, chatting with a gent from the NYC food community about our current projects. I was going on about home food preservation and he said to me, "Funny, you don't look like a canner." Admittedly, it was pretty late-heaven knows what I looked like at that point. ... Food writing is dead. Long live food writing!
I’ve been trying not to get too worked up by Amanda Hesser’s recent claim that food writing is dead. Partly because, let’s face it, every food writer has felt that way at one time or another and maybe she was just having one of those days. Also, I respect Ms. Hesser and how well she’s done for herself and hesitate to argue with such an accomplished gal. After all, I am one of those (old school) food writers she talks ... Big on Fat
I am very pro-fat. Good butter, creamy yogurt, whole milk, lard (yes, lard) from pasture-raised animals, oily fish such as salmon and sardines, walnuts, olives, avocados—these foods, often vilified for their fat content—have always been at the heart of traditional food ways and, as we rediscover their many benefits, are coming back into favor again. And that’s good news. Fat brings flavor to dishes and is an essential part of our diet. Calling fish “brain food” isn’t just an old ... Continue Reading ››

Real Food is Not Hip
Call the sustainable food movement radical. Call it inspiring. You can even say it’s unattainable or even the privileged musings of life seen through the lens of a chilled glass of chardonnay. Just please, don’t call it “hip.” In conversations about our changing food system, it’s not the words of doubt or disbelief that get me down. “Unrealistic” may be hard to hear but at least it launches an important debate and allows us to really dig ... Eat Here! A book tour, meal by meal
I am eating so well on this book tour. I just have to give a shout out to all of the chefs who are cooking up fabulous local, authentic meals. Here is a rundown of some of the great places I've hit along the way. I'll continue to blog/Tweet/FB my meals so you can see what's cookin' and give these joints a try when you are in town. Thank you cooks for your dedication to local growers and producers, your ... Continue Reading ››
What’s in your canner?
I know that a lot of eaters wait until August or September to fire up their canners. I say, bust that baby out! There are already great things to be putting up. I've got rhubarb, onions, strawberries and cherries squirreled away. Don't miss the chance to lock away these summer tastes--they'll be your genie in a bottle come the first frost. I've been taking my kids out to the u-pic to get the good berries. Let me tell you--kids are good ... Continue Reading ››
First Blog Post!
You’ve come a long way, Baby! Remember that cigarette ad? What was it for? Virginia Slims, maybe. It’s funny to think of a time when smoking some sort of dolled up cig could count as a sign of women’s liberation. It’s funny how much can change in just a few decades. I am crossing a ten mile marker myself. This summer marks the 10th anniversary of the cross-country motorcycle trip that changed my life—that opened my eyes to the negative impacts of ...
